Dmitri Klebanov (1907-1987)

About the Composer

The Jewish-Ukrainian composer Dmitri Klebanov (1907-1986) remains largely unknown in the West due to Soviet-era repression and anti-Semitism. A conductor, pianist, violinist and educator as well as a composer, Klebanov displayed his musical gifts at an early age. At 16, he was the youngest student in his class at Ukraine’s Kharkiv Institute of Music and Drama and by his graduation in 1926, he had composed numerous instrumental works and songs. After a year spent as a violinist with the Leningrad Opera Orchestra, he returned to Kharkiv and conducted the Kharkiv Radio Orchestra, lectured and premiered his first Violin Concerto in 1940. The German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941 halted his career. Klebanov was exiled to Tashkent, Uzbekistan along with 150,000 Jewish refugees

Upon his return to Kharkiv, Klebanov wrote his First Symphony, dedicated to the martyrs of Babi Yar. Denounced as unpatriotic by the Soviets, he was stripped of his posts until the thaw of the Khrushchev era when he was offered the directorship of the Ukraine Composers’ Union. This he refused because it required membership of the Communist Party. Klebanov continued to compose into the mid-1980s and left a legacy of nine symphonies, concertos, operas, ballets, film scores and approximately a hundred songs, including art songs.  He remains largely unknown in the West as prior to ARC’s recording, only two compositions were commercially released in the West.
