The Ukrainian Art Song Project (UASP) and the Musica Leopolis recording label were founded in 2004 by Pavlo Hunka, the renowned British bass-baritone singer, with the dream of acquiring and promoting the classical treasures of Ukrainian artsong. Pavlo teamed with Roman Hurko, composer and opera director, to produce the recordings.
Over 300 art songs, many of them masterpieces of Ukraine’s most eminent classical composers such as Mykola Lysenko, Kyrylo Stetsenko, Yakiv Stepovyi, Denis Sichynsky, Stanyslav Liudkevych, Wasyl Barvinsky and Stefania Turkewich have already been recorded. The Ukrainian lyrics are translated into English, French and German. Scores are available for download at no cost from the UASP website and Art Songs are now also available for download on iTunes.
The project, a long-term, significant, non-profit music venture, has been developed under the auspices of the Canadian Ukrainian Opera Association, a registered charity, whose objectives are to promote Ukrainian classical music in all forms including live performances and recordings. A volunteer Board, located in Toronto, spearheads UASP fundraising, activities and events.
The Ukrainian Art Song Project is supported by an international cast of artists and enthusiastic music lovers. The results of this project will be the gift of an extraordinary musical legacy to the world.
